Verses in Quran about Marriage
| Surah |
Verse #(Ayat) |
Translation of Verse (Ayat) in English |
| 2 |
235 |
There is no blame on you if ye make an indirect
offer of betrothal or hold it in your hearts. Allah
knows that ye cherish them in your hearts: But do
not make a secret contract with them except in terms
honorable, nor resolve on the tie of marriage till
the term prescribed is fulfilled. And know that
Allah Knoweth what is in your hearts, and take heed
of Him; and know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most
Forbearing. |

237 |
And if ye divorce them before consummation, but
after the fixation of a dower for them, then the
half of the dower (is due to them), unless they
remit it or (the man's half) is remitted by him in
whose hands is the marriage tie; and the remission
(of the man's half) is the nearest to righteousness.
And do not forget liberality between yourselves. For
Allah sees well all that ye do. |

And give the women (on marriage) their dower as
a free gift; but if they, of their own good
pleasure, remit any part of it to you, take it and
enjoy it with right good cheer. |

6 |
Make trial of orphans until they reach the age
of marriage; if then ye find sound judgment in them,
release their property to them; but consume it not
wastefully, nor in haste against their growing up.
If the guardian is well-off, let him claim no
remuneration, but if he is poor, let him have for
himself what is just and reasonable. When ye release
their property to them, take witnesses in their
presence: But all-sufficient is Allah in taking
account. |

Prohibited to you (for marriage) are:- your
mothers, daughters, sisters; father's sisters,
mother's sisters; brother's daughters, sister's
daughters; foster-mothers who gave you suck,
foster-sisters; your wives' mothers; your
step-daughters under your guardianship, born of your
wives to whom ye have gone in,- no prohibition if ye
have not gone in;- (those who have been) wives of
your sons proceeding from your loins; and two
sisters in wedlock at one and the same time, except
for what is past; for Allah is Oft- forgiving, Most
Merciful;- |

24 |
Also (prohibited are) women already married,
except those whom your right hands possess: Thus
hath Allah ordained (prohibitions) against you:
Except for these, all others are lawful, provided ye
seek (them in marriage) with gifts from your
property,- desiring chastity, not fornication from
them. Give them their dowers (at least) as
prescribed; but if, after a dower is prescribed,
agree Mutually (to vary it), there is no blame on
you, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-wise. |

This day are (all) things good and pure made
lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book
is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them.
(Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste
women who are believers, but chaste women among the
People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when
ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity,
not lewdness, nor secret intrigues. If any one
rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the
Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have
lost (all spiritual good). |
| 23 |
6 |
Except with those joined to them in the marriage
bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands
possess,- for (in their case) they are free from
blame, |
| 24 |
33 |
Let those who find not the wherewithal for
marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah gives
them means out of His grace. And if any of your
slaves ask for a deed in writing (for emancipation),
give them such a deed if ye know any good in them:
yea, give them something yourselves out of the means
which Allah has given to you. But force not your
maids to prostitution when they desire chastity, in
order that ye may make a gain in the goods of this
life. But if anyone compels them, yet, after such
compulsion, is Allah, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful
(to them), |
| 24 |
60 |
Such elderly women as are past the prospect of
marriage,- there is no blame on them if they lay
aside their (outer) garments, provided they make not
a wanton display of their beauty: but it is best for
them to be modest: and Allah is One Who sees and
knows all things. |
| 25 |
54 |
It is He Who has created man from water: then
has He established relationships of lineage and
marriage: for thy Lord has power (over all things).
|
| 33 |
37 |
Behold! Thou didst say to one who had received
the grace of Allah and thy favor: "Retain thou (in
wedlock) thy wife, and fear Allah." But thou didst
hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make
manifest: thou didst fear the people, but it is more
fitting that thou shouldst fear Allah. Then when
Zaid had dissolved (his marriage) with her, We
joined her in marriage to thee: in order that (in
future) there may be no difficulty to the Believers
in (the matter of) marriage with the wives of their
adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved (their
marriage) with them. And Allah's command must be
fulfilled. |

10 |
O ye who believe! When there come to you
believing women refugees, examine (and test) them:
Allah knows best as to their Faith: if ye ascertain
that they are Believers, then send them not back to
the Unbelievers. They are not lawful (wives) for the
Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful
(husbands) for them. But pay the Unbelievers what
they have spent (on their dower), and there will be
no blame on you if ye marry them on payment of their
dower to them. But hold not to the ties (marriage
contract) of unbelieving women: ask for what ye have
spent on their dowers, and let the (Unbelievers) ask
for what they have spent (on the dowers of women who
come over to you). Such is the command of Allah. He
judges (with justice) between you. And Allah is Full
of Knowledge and Wisdom. |
